Robin Reider teaches many workshops out of her home and other locations such as senior citizen centers, community colleges and elementary schools. Among the workshops she teaches are pictorial tapestry/color gradiation and natural dyeing of wool. Her teaching experience is vast and she loves to share her knowledge and background in weaving.
In her pictorial tapestry/color gradiation workshops, students will build on their weaving skills by learning more complex techniques such as horizontal and vertical grading and combining colors and following curved lines. Students will then use these techniques to weave a tapestry based on a landscape drawing they created on paper from a sample design.
In the natural dyeing workshop students will dye wool with local plants, including onion skins, marigolds, chamisa and cota. Imported plant dyes such as indigo, madder, cochineal, brasilwood and logwood will complete the brilliant color range. Students will create a recipe file, learn the use of mordunts to fix the color and additives to change the colors. Participants will leave with about six pounds of dyed wool and an understanding of the dye process from start to finish.
